September 8, 2009:  Cherie Schroeder, Director of the Foster & Kinship Care Education Program, Woodland Community College. Foster care pre-service training is generally held 5 times a year.  Click here to find out more about foster care needs and opportunities in Yolo County, or better yet, call to see how you can help (530 661 5772)

August 4th, 2009: Carolyn Schrader, from the Luna Vista Club, is the Mid Valley region District coordinator for Literacy.  Her presentation on literacy issues in Woodland is available here; hopefully the successful Autoskills pilot program at Dingle School last year will lead to expansion in future years.

February 3, 2009: Waste Management presentation on sustainability/recycling by Amanda Fairley.  Here is her presentation.

January 20, 2009  Rotoplast

Bob Tamblyn introduced speaker Margaret Watson-Hopkins, a former Life Flight and UCD Med Center nurse who now works at Shriner’s Hospital in Sacramento and also provides community management and intervention services. Not to be outdone by her husband and Bob, both Shriner Past Potentates, she joined a geographically diverse Rotaplast Mission team to care for children in the Philippines at a hospital in Cebu last September. She and her colleagues volunteered to step into this third-world medical milieu to furnish 89 surgeries for cleft lip and cleft palate patients, as well as dental exams and extractions, for 104 kids and their grateful families.

A sense of pride and admiration enveloped all of us as Margaret concluded her presentation. We Rotarians continue to exemplify the type of “service above self” that Presidents from Kennedy to Obama have sought to inspire. Our Rotary Foundation, to which so many of us contribute, surely could not serve a more noble purpose than by funding Rotaplast Missions such as this.       Here is her slide presentation (some of the slides are alittle tough, but imagine the poor folks that have to go through life without this corrective surgery.  It makes you realize what a blessing it is to be able to smile at someone or for them to smile at you/not look away when they see you.)

March 11, 2008 UC Davis Outreach and International Programs.  Robert Kerr and Nicole Ranganath 530 754 8941.  See fascinating programs at work at UC Davis.
