Announcements
The annual auction dinner is on March 27, 2010. The goal is to have about 60 silent auction items and another 20 oral auction items. Aniek is in charge of tickets. If you haven’t picked them up yet, please see Aniek or Alan Flory. The big raffle this year is going to be a trip to New York with a few Broadway tickets thrown in. A maximum of 150 tickets will be sold at $100. Even if you do not win the big prize, your ticket stub will be good for two tickets to a future play at the Opera House. The District Governor will be visiting on February 16th. There will be a board meeting with the DG prior to the February 16th general meeting. Chuck Maltese announced that the City has a Parks & Rec Foundation that funds events like the 4th of July Celebration. The City is trying to distance itself from the management of the Foundation and is looking for a few volunteers to help run the board. Pam Vargas announced that the United Way is having their annual Recognition Dinner on February 25th. She also noted that her family is going to be going to the Philippines in March to do some Missionary work. Rigo noted that most of the materials are in place to complete the Rotary Park project but they are currently dealing with some electrical issues. Gary Bunch informed the club that Don Smith recently had triple bypass surgery and he is at home recovering.

Recognition
Scott Johnston asked Mark Faye, Bob Tamblyn and Jim Nolan to pay up for the advice that they gave PE Werum. Marc Faye started off thankful time by welcoming guest Ron Enomoto and provided him with two tickets to the annual dinner. Mark Ullrich announced that Wild Wings has opened up their new clubhouse. Jim McGibbon was happy to announce that his 12th grandchild was born. He also laughed about a recent bumper sticker that he saw, “Honk if you Love Jesus, Text if you want to meet him.” Gary Wegener thought it was odd that he received a gift registry card for an engagement party that he attended. It turns out that the engagement party turned out to be the actual wedding. George Berrettoni called out Gary Bunch for driving like a mad man. Scott then moved on to his Super Bowl Trivia questions. After taking what seemed like days to explain his rules, he gave up, and his recognition time was up.
Rags to Riches
Ticket #8833 got Herb Chandler a free lunch.
Today’s Program
Marc Faye introduced two of our Club’s Past Presidents, Bob Griffith and Frank Gardner. Bob joined the Woodland Rotary Club in 1949. At that time there were still Charter Members who were active. Bob became President in 1965/66. With the Club being roughly 80 years old, Bob served at the mid point in the Club’s history. In 1965/66 there were 110 members, with nine still being active today. He noted that two of the programs given during his time as President were from current members Bob Seney and Marc Faye. The club averaged 90% attendance. The club held an outstanding 40th anniversary party at the Elks Lodge. A sad time for the club during Bob’s year as President was when they raised the annual dues from $25 to $35 a year, which caused one member to resign. Frank Gardner followed Bob and mentioned that he had joined the club in 1955 and became president in 1968. Frank managed to attend a Rotary International Convention in Denver prior to becoming nominated for President. He eventually became nominated for President and he attended his RI Convention in Mexico City. Due to non-Rotary conflict with Roy Reigels, Frank was not informed that he was going to be the President elect in the traditional manner. Someone called him to say, “Oh by the way, you are going to be our next President.” Frank said that the meetings back in the 1960’s were a little more lively with people throwing fire crackers, wet napkins being placed on seats and the clanging of plates a common practice to distract the President. One tradition that has definitely continued today is that there were arguments over the quality of food served at the Rotary meetings back then as well.
Upcoming Programs
The 100th Anniversary in Scouting will be celebrated at our next meeting. Past District Governor Brian Thiessen will be in attendance. The “life of service” has been important to Brian since his first days in Scouting in Nevada City. Scouting remains a passion and he also serves in leadership at local, national and international Scouting.
