Today's Meeting

President Dona opened the meeting with the sad news that long time Club member Ron Maraviov passed away on January 24th. The Club stood in a moment of silence in Ron’s honor.

Jim Nolan led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Mark Werum got the group through Rotary Grace.

Sean Kolb was installed as a member of the Club. Sponsor Mark Ullrich introduced Sean as being born & raised in Woodland. He graduated from Sac State in 2003 with a BA in Economics. He began his banking career with Yolo Community Bank and today serves as Vice President – Commercial Loan Officer for North Valley Bank in Woodland. He enjoys bass fishing, beekeeping, and spending time with family. Sean says he’s ready to give up golf, but Mark wants to change that mind set. Sean is a 5 year Board member with YoloArts, and with the Woodland Community College Foundation. He also participates with the WJUSD community Ag Advisory Committee. Sean and his wife Mandy have two children, Amie and Griffin, and reside in Woodland. Mark was particularly pleased to be bringing in such a young (age 31), new member. President Dona claimed some credit for Sean coming in too. If you would like to take a look at a picture of Sean and Mandy from their wedding, check out the front page of the Yolo Fliers Club website.

As is our custom, Sean was greeted personally by each member attending and who also donated funds on his behalf so that Sean will start his membership as sustaining member with Rotary International.

Visiting Rotarians

Don Huff III announced Steve Lack of the Pleasant Hill Club was attending today, a guest of Karl Diekman. Steve is a Rotary District Governor Nominee for 2013-14.

Guests of Rotarians

Mahlon Whittle introduced Dean Case, a retired US Air Force Fire Marshall.

Announcements

Don Huff II reminded us the Club’s Annual Dinner/Auction fundraiser is set for Saturday, March 10th at the Fairgrounds. Members attending today received their dinner tickets for the event. Mark Ullrich said he is looking for oral auction items, see him with ideas. Tabb Randolph said he is looking for sponsors for the event. And Seth Wurzel repeated his earlier requests for silent auction items. Contact these people to help the cause. For the oral and silent auction item donations we need clear descriptions and a $$ value figure for each item.

Gary Wegener passed out copies of the Club’s new business card which each of us can take and give to people we know who might be prospective new members. Gary says a related brochure is on the way.

Clancy Duppong reported that our program speaker next week will be Steve Marks, Jr. talking about the new Woodland Polytechnic Academy.

Kris Kristensen, speaking for organizer Gary Wirth, reminded the group the Club’s Mystery Golf Trip will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2012, leaving from the County Fair Mall at 7:45am. The $100 per player fee includes transportation, golf with cart, range balls, lunch, and an educational opportunity on the way home. Checks made out to Woodland Rotary Club need to be given ASAP to Gary or Kris to sign up. Gary suggests getting your checks in no later than the February 7th meeting since space is limited and the morning Club is already getting their members signed up. Don’t miss out!

Tim Pettit said signups for the Rotary 4 Way Test Speech Contest for local high school students are being accepted through March 1st. Club members are asked to encourage young people we know to consider the opportunity. Contact Tim for details.

President Dona said the Club’s meeting on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, will be highlighted by the Woodland High School Jazz Band (remember them from their appearance with us last August?). This is a good chance to bring your main squeeze to join us at the meeting.

Birthdays

Jason Smith celebrated on January 5th (1976, Anaheim). Pamela Vargas turned 40 years old (really??) on January 7th.

Anniversaries

None.

Recognition

Veteran George Berrettoni took the reins today. Karl Diekman was happy about his recent trip to Japan which included a tour of the old military base he was stationed at 40 years ago. Jim McGibbon was sad at the recent passing of Carolyn Brumley, but was also happy to have helped deliver our newest member, Sean Kolb, some 31 years ago. Sean was happy Dr. McGibbon did not tell any stories about his mom from that day. Tabb Randolph, in San Diego on business last week (yeah, sure) said he found a meeting of the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas. No fooling!

George fined the youngest of those members at the underage table, presumably on general principles.

George then launched into a Napa Valley trivia experience. Tim Pettit knew Francis Ford Coppola had a vineyard in the Napa Valley, but couldn’t remember he directed the movie, Apocalypse Now. Jim McGibbon knew the TV show Falcon Crest was filmed in the Napa Valley. Gene Benneth learned portions of the movie, Howard the Duck, was filmed there. Mahlon Whittle found out that boysenberries were first developed there in the 1920s. Jim Nolan discovered loud speakers were invented there in 1911. George ended by saying that Napa County actually contains 97 different valleys. Who knew???

Rags to Riches

With the pot bulging at $1085, despite help from his new member Sean Kolb, Mark Ullrich drew a free lunch. Way to go Mark!

Today’s Program

Kris Kristensen introduced Tony Delevati, Club Treasurer, as our speaker today. Tony was born & raised in Woodland, graduating from Woodland High School. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Cal State Hayward in obtaining a BS degree. He later earned an MPA from Golden Gate University. He went to work for Mark Ullrich in 1981, became a CPA, and partnered with Mark to form Ullrich Delevati CPAs in 1990. Specializing in estate planning and trusts, Tony is a past President of the Sacramento Estate Planning Council. Tony became Club Treasurer about 5 years ago, not long after becoming a member of Woodland Rotary. He also serves a Treasurer of Woodland Rotary Endowment and is a Board member for the Center for Land Based Learning. He and wife Margie have two children: Deanna, a cosmetologist/massage therapist (medical massage), and Alex, a student.

Tony gave members an overview of the Club’s financial situation. Slides displayed by Tony as part of his presentation will soon be posted on the Club’s website.

Overall, the Club’s finances have seen a decline in revenue the past five years, coinciding with the Club’s declining membership. This year the Club’s annual budget anticipates about $17,000 in revenues of which 47% are expected to come from member dues. A large part of Club expenses are the lunches served at our meetings. While charging members and guests $15 for lunch, the Club pays our caterer $14 per lunch actually served, with a minimum of 40 lunches paid per meeting. This is the agreement we have to use the Hotel Woodland for our meetings. This is why it is particularly important for members to attend regularly, and why we have a $15 per missed meeting charge.

The Club does have a healthy reserve of over $50,000 says Tony. This amount is equivalent to more than two years of current Club expenses.

Tony pointed out the Club’s major fundraising event, the Dinner/Auction, is actually conducted under the Woodland Rotary Endowment rather than through the Club’s books. The Endowment is established as a 501 c 3 non-profit organization, so that donors can take advantage of potential tax deductions. The Endowment for formed to issue the Club’s annual college scholarships to top local high school students, as well as to pay for major donations to other selected “Qualified Charities” (i.e. the Red Cross this year, and the Woodland Music Boosters next year). Currently the Endowment has a fund balance of approximately $270,000. Efforts have been made over several years to build the Endowment’s fund balance up to a point where the scholarship expenses could be completely covered by investment earnings of the fund.

George was congratulated for staying awake during today's program.

If you have any questions about the Club’s or Endowment’s financial situation, ask Tony.
