Today’s Program
District Governor Elect Karl Diekman introduced current District Governor Earl Kilmer. Earl joined Rotary in 1985. He was his club’s President in 2003/04. Earl loves vacationing and has been a volunteer firefighter for almost three decades. Earl started off his presentation by presenting President Bob with a bottle of wine. Earl asked Bob to drink the wine at 12:00AM on July 1st to celebrate the ending of their terms. Prior to becoming DG he took time to visit some of the clubs in our district. Earl noted that there is a misconception in the clubs about the role of the DG and his staff. The District staff is not the enforcer of RI’s rules and regulations. Their primary role is to assist the clubs within the district to become the best that they can. He wants the clubs to be great. Earl proudly announced that the district will have three new clubs within the next few months. He knows that every club is different and he wants every club to do what is best for them and their community. Earl has asked every club to focus on two areas, with the first being membership. He noted that it is every member’s duty, not just the club’s membership committee, to try and bring in new members. He asked that between now and the end of the year that every member bring a guest to a meeting. Based on the fact that roughly half of all guests eventually join Rotary he said that our club could easily jump from 76 to 114 by the end of the year. He asked that we not be selfish and tell people why we love Rotary so much. Earl went on to define his ABC’s of a club (A) Activities of a Club (B) Bodies and (C) Cash. The more bodies that we have, leads to more cash, which leads to more activities. The lifeblood of any club is the membership. EREY – Every Rotarian Every Year. Earl’s second point of emphasis was the Foundation. Earl asked that we all continue our commitment to the Foundation. Earl noted that our donations to the Foundation eventually make their way back to the local districts. A great example is the matching funds the local Rotary clubs received for the Shade Project. Earl then had the pleasure of presenting guest Susan Melanson with a pin recognizing her fifth Paul Harris Fellowship. Earl spoke of the good that the Foundation does from Peace and Conflict Resolution to Rotary Exchange. Rotary is changing the world one person at a time. Rotary is able to do this while other groups can’t because Rotary is international, and has no political or religious affiliations.
