Today's Meeting

President Bob opened another well attended meeting with the reminder that we are not only the original Rotary Club of Woodland, but continue to be the community’s best.
Bob Seney led the Club in the Pledge, and Mark Faye combined with Bob Tamblyn to get a pretty good version of Rotary Grace out of us.
President Bob provided us with some thoughts by legendary basketball coach John Wooden, now 100 years of age, on the importance of balance in our lives. “Next to love, balance is the most important thing”, says Wooden.
Visiting Rotarians
Carla Sanborn announced that Ron Tribbett (Dixon) and Steve Bick (Davis) were in attendance.
Guests of Rotarians
Karl Diekman introduced Bob Meyer of the Yolo Fliers Club. Tim Pettit introduced his step son Darren Glenn.
Announcements
Mahlon Whittle presented Jim Nolan ($2,000) and Bob Griffith ($3,000) with pins honoring their cumulative contribution milestones to the Rotary International Foundation. President Bob reminded us that Club members are encouraged to contribute at least $100 annually to support the Foundation’s good works.
President Bob reported on the Club’s Board of Director’s meeting January 7th. According to the Treasurer’s report the Club’s operating budget is currently $4,000 “in the black” (it took Bob awhile to find the right color description). Also, February is Rotary Public Awareness month where efforts to make the community aware of Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign will be made through local news articles and recognition by the City and/or County.
President Bob encouraged all us members to go on the Club’s website (www.woodlandrotary.org) to check and update our personal contact information (email address and phone numbers) as necessary.
Reminder: we will be celebrating the Boy Scouts 100th anniversary at our February 9th meeting. Also, District Governor Earl Kilmer will be attending our Club’s February 16th meeting. President Bob encourages members to attend these particularly special sessions.
President Bob indicated the Club has received an application from Ariana Metz for an Ambassadorial Scholarship.
Birthdays
Peter Holmes celebrated his 50th birthday January 6th (Fresno).
Anniversaries

No anniversaries in January.
Recognition
George Berrettoni controlled (or incited) the action today. Karl Diekman rang the bell for enjoying a Christmas holiday in Japan which included a rare visit to Tokyo’s Imperial Palace. As incoming District Governor, Karl also appreciated the recent assistance he received from Bob Tamblyn’s Interact Club. Dona Mast was happy her granddaughter got a driver’s license. Randy Blake was happy about the trip he recently took to New Orleans, and found his house not tee-peed on his return. Ken Nordgren was happy he took down his holiday lights without injury. Scott Johnston enjoyed a trip to Palm Dessert where he took money from Gary Wirth on the golf course. Tim Pettit, Bruce Ahlquist, Jim Nolan and Randy Blake were unable to correctly answer some bogus questions from George. Carey Sullivan was confident his San Diego Chargers were going to win this weekend. Roger Kohlmeier was not happy with the 49ers, but felt they should do better next year with a returning offensive coordinator. Mark Faye is looking forward to getting back to Hawaii’s warmer climate…brother Peter wondered why he didn’t just stay there. Craig Miyamoto ponders what the coaching change at USC will mean for his Cal Bears.
Rags to Riches

With the pot at $711, David Contto drew a free lunch. Clyde Brooker says 35 cards remain in the deck after today…the odds are improving!
Today’s Program
Peter Holmes introduced Kurt Koch, founder of PrimeLink Solutions LLC, who spoke on “Is Your Business Sustainable?” Born and raised in the Bay Area, Kurt has a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Operations and worked in restaurant management for four years. He then moved on to sales with Sysco Food Service and Papercraft (world’s largest re-distributor of paper and disposable supplies for food service and janitorial distributors). He founded Ally Cat Bicycles (those bikes that attach to the back of a regular bike for your child to ride on) and sold the company after two years. Over five years ago he started PrimeLink Solutions, a manufacturer and importer of eco-friendly packaging used in food service and other industries. A Woodland resident since 1990, Kurt has one child in college and another at Pioneer High School.
PrimeLink produces eco-friendly cutlery, hinged ‘food to go’ containers, cup carriers, and plates made from plant starch material such as sugar cane and other sustainable resources. Kurt’s business has grown 300% per year each of its first 5 years. Kurt pointed out that terms like biodegradable, compostable, recyclable, carbon footprint, and sustainable are regularly heard today even though they are not well defined or understood. In fact the State of California has recently banned the use of the word “biodegradable” in commercial packaging because of its misleading use in the past. Kurt explained that whether you understand, or even agree with, these and related environmental preservation concepts, businesses need to pay close attention to these trends because they generate considerable business opportunities and challenges. For example, Starbucks uses 3 billion cups per year in their stores and they want those cups to be 100% recyclable by 2012. Because of Starbucks’ size the cup manufacturing industry must pay close attention and make necessary production changes in order to be part of that business opportunity. Similarly, Walmart, the world’s largest retailer is looking closely at knowing and eventually labeling the carbon footprint (i.e. product source information and the carbon dioxide production emissions made along the way) of all the products they sell. Kurt predicts this effort will even impact local rice farmers eventually. Business sustainability depends on paying attention to these issues.
