Today's Meeting

President Bob opened today’s meeting on a pleasant Fall day. Jason Smith led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Bob Tamblyn set the tone for Rotary Grace.
The President later read a passage from John Wooden, former UCLA basketball coach, on Nine Points to Bring Happiness. Bob emphasized that Wooden measures success by personal effort and living up to one’s potential.
Visiting Rotarians
Ron Maraviov introduced Jim Engstrom from the West Sacramento Club. Jim subsequently introduced his wife Marsha who also attended.
Guests of Rotarians
Jim McGibbon introduced his wife, Susan. Les Engelmann introduced his wife Gail, Audre Ullrich (wife of Mark Ullrich who was not in attendance), and Tom LaBrie. Former member Marilyn Wirth, wife of Gary Wirth, was introduced by President Bob.
Announcements
District Governor Earl Kilmer will be attending our Club’s meeting on December 1st. President Bob said the Club’s Board will meet with the Governor at 10am that morning in our meeting room at the Hotel Woodland.
President Bob reported that the annual Rotary Club Christmas party, organized this year by the Luna Vista Club, will be held Friday, December 4th at the Yolo Fliers Club. 6pm cocktails/7pm dinner. $35 per person. Dona Mast is taking reservations.
Saturday, December 5th is Rotary Day at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, beginning at 11:00am.
President Bob reported our Club’s share of the proceeds from the Rotary Beer Booth at the 2009 Yolo County Fair will be $2300, but we haven’t received the check as yet.
Mark Werum confirmed the Club’s next Annual Auction will be held Saturday, March 27, 2010 and that the event’s Planning Committee will meet at 5pm this Thursday, November 19th at President Bob’s office (429 First Street) to discuss it further.
Chuck Maltese said ‘the Curmudgeons” (aka past Presidents group) will be meeting at Kevin Haarberg’s home at 6pm on Monday, December 7th to discuss nominations for next year’s Club officer and Board seats.
Ron Maraviov attended a recent meeting on the Rotary Park improvement project scheduled to take place sometime Spring 2010. Apparently donations of skilled labor as well as Club funds will be necessary from all participating Rotary Clubs. Volunteers with carpentry skills will especially be sought. President Bob emphasized that since the Park was originally built by our Club we will need to make a good showing on this effort.
The Reno train trip is scheduled for January 24-25, 2010. Tabb Randolph reported at least 4 people from our Club have signed up so far. We have 8 slots to fill for that event. Contact Tabb if you are interested in attending.
Birthdays
Bob Dorris celebrated his 78th on Oct 28 (Reno). Tabb Randolph celebrated his 52nd (Woodland) birthday today and was given the “Old Gray Mare” treatment by the Club.
Anniversaries

Those with recent anniversaries were not in attendance today.
Recognition
Jim McGibbon led this portion of the meeting. In honor of Stanford’s recent football win over USC, Jim asked all Stanford alums to stand. Carl Rodegerdts was delighted to contribute two $5 bills symbolizing the 55 points Stanford scored on that memorable day. Kris Kristensen offered a story about a lawyer at the Pearly Gates which President Bob appreciated so much he directed Scott Johnston to pay Kris’ fine.
Clancy Duppong asked for a moment of silence in respect for his North Dakota University football team which lost at UC Davis last Saturday. Flushed with a sense of victory UCD alum David Janes offered a $5 donation challenge to all Sacramento State alums based on the outcome of next weekend’s Causeway Classic showdown. Not much response was heard from Sac State representatives. When asked to share any memories from his wedding or honeymoon, Don McNary indicated he was scheduled for an appointment with his hearing doctor later this afternoon.
Roy Holmes (yes, Holmes) was happy about his model airplane flying this Fall, but apparently one of his new planes crashed in the hands of another pilot. No problem though, Roy says it can be fixed.
Frank Gardner’s doctor says Frank’s knee is doing OK after the surgery performed last year. Frank doesn’t want to see his doc anymore. George Berrettoni was sad about two shanks he had on the golf course last weekend. Mark Werum was happy about the birth of his 7th grandchild; a 6th granddaughter. Carey Sullivan’s son, having immersed himself the past 9 months at Marine Corp Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, has adopted some of lingo of the region…much to his dad’s delight. Todd Tommeraason was happy his son’s Sacramento City College football team will be playing in a bowl game this weekend. Chuck Moore was at a loss for words.
Rags to Riches

With the pot at $486, Gary Wegener got a free lunch.
Today’s Program
Carey Sullivan introduced Gary Wirth, a Woodland Rotary Club member since 1969, as our speaker. He indicated Gary began playing golf as a high school sophomore once a doctor told him he could no longer play football.
Gary gave a slide presentation about the golf trip he organized to Ireland in July 2009 for 14 local golfers. In addition to Gary (aka “The Kahuna”), trip attendees included Club members Scott Johnston, Chuck Maltese, Mark Ullrich, Kevin Haarberg, Jim McGibbon, Les Engelmann and Kris Kristensen. Other attendees were Richard O’Malley, John Giguiere, Chuck Santoni, Tom LaBrie, Jim Engstom, and Jim Giottonini. With the valuable assistance of a rented bus and driver, the group played 13 links (i.e. seaside) courses over two weeks, losing 412 golf balls, and consuming approximately 230 meals and 196 bottles of wine. Needless to say, this was a happy group. Specific courses played were: Island, European Club, Old Head, Waterville, Ceann Sibeal, Dooks, Tralee, Ballybunion (Old), Lahinch (Castle), Doonbeg, Carne, Rosapenna (Morris-Ruddy), and Ballyliffin (Glashedy).
