Announcements
President Bob announced that 120 people, including 13 from our Club, attended last week’s meeting with Richard King. King was a dynamic speaker and a good time was had by all.
In what sounded more like a plug for Big O Tires, Mark Werum distributed calendars to help us note that the Club’s next Annual Auction will be held Saturday, March 27, 2010. Our annual scholarship fundraising event will be conducted in a partnership with the Woodland Opera House.
Carey Sullivan reported that work to repaint the exterior of the old Maxwell School for the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center, a project to which this Club is a financial contributor, recently began. Sullivan plugged Brooks Painting as the contractor on the job.
The District Governor will be attending our Club’s meeting on December 1st. President Bob said he would through in $100 if the Club has 100% attendance that day.
President Bob reported that the annual Rotary Club Christmas party, organized this year by the Luna Vista Club, will be held Friday, December 4th at the Yolo Fliers Club. 6pm cocktails/7pm dinner. $35 per person.
Saturday, December 5th is Rotary Day at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley.
Tabb Randolph reported the Reno train trip is scheduled for January 24-25, 2010. Our Club has 8 slots to fill for that event. Contact Tab if you are interested in attending.
President Bob announced an election of new Rotary Endowment Board members for the year was necessary. Ben Pate, Aniek Ramsay, Les Engelmann, Christian Sherrill, and Clancy Duppong have agreed to be candidates for the five open seats. Hearing no other nominations, it was moved by Jim McGibbon and seconded by many that the slate be elected by acclamation. This was approved unanimously.
In honor of tomorrow’s Veteran’s Day President Bob read a passage from Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front, and asked the Club’s veterans to stand and be recognized for their service to the country.
Birthdays
Lots of birthdays this week: Bruce Ahlquist celebrated his 67th on Oct 28 (Minneapolis); Scott Johnston his 56th on Oct 30 (Woodland); and Randy Blake his 54th on Nov 2 (Long Beach). Carla Sanborn partied hard on her 70th on Nov 7 (Hawthorne NV). Mark Ullrich (60 years, Woodland) and Duane Ewing (55 years, Sacramento) celebrated their birthdays today and were appropriately serenaded by the Club.
Anniversaries

There were no anniversaries celebrated this week.
Recognition
Gary Bunch served as last minute stand-in. He fined Linda Konietzko for lack of recent attendance. Dona Mast paid for not properly defending Amy Trann (I think??). Gary also confirmed that Carla Sanborn felt her age after her birthday celebration. Gary himself paid for attending a nice Hawaiian vacation made possible by the help of Maylon Whittle.
Tabb Randolph was happy to announce that his company, Wraith, Scarlett and Randolph Insurance, will be moving into the old Cranston Building in late Spring 2010. Carl Rodegerdts and Kevin Haarberg were happy to have participated in Carla’s birthday party. Carl was also happy that Stanford beat Gary Wirth’s Oregon Ducks last Saturday. Gary Wirth and Kris Kristensen were happy to have travelled to Pinehurst, North Carolina last week to play golf. Craig Miyamoto and his son had a good time attending Cal’s football game last Saturday. David Janes and Clancy Duppong have a $5 bet going on outcome of next Saturday’s North Dakota/UCD football game. George Burger has happy for his champion Yankees. Ken Nordgren paid for having 3 desserts. Bob Griffith realized he was discharged from the Army 65 years ago today and likes his new Focus. Christian is still keeping Woodland’s backs in line and indicated the pilates program is also doing well. Jim McGibbon and Peter Faye shared personal memories about wim van Muyden.
Rags to Riches

With the pot at $447, Carl Rodegerdts got a free lunch.
Today’s Program
Carey Sullivan introduced Woodland Police Department Captain Dan Bellini. Bellini began his career with the Department in 1987 and has risen steadily in his career. In 2005 he was promoted to his current position, the second in command of the Department. Dan is the son of a former Rotarian Al Bellini, and is also an avid runner and bee keeper.
Captain Bellini spoke about the Police Department’s Crisis Management Team, a specialized and heavily trained unit that handles unusual and critical law enforcement situations in Woodland. The team has 8 members with very distinct roles to support efforts to negotiate the resolution of dangerous incidents. The team works closely with other law enforcement agencies and can be called upon to assist other jurisdictions as necessary. Captain Bellini, a former commander of the team, gave a detailed case study of an incident the team handled successfully in 2000 which illustrated how the team works and the difficulties it must manage.
