Today's Meeting

President Robert Nakken opened the meeting with a vigorous rap to the bell. He reminded us once again that we are to “Original” Rotary club of Woodland where the Past, Present and Future of Rotary come together. Officer Dan Stroski led us in the pledge and Bob Tamblyn dropped his voice on octave so that the rest of us could join him in Rotary Grace. We sounded pretty good for a change so the meeting got off to a good start. Bob cited some Words of Wisdom from Colin Powell on how America is a family.
Visiting Rotarians
Gary Bunch introduced Ray McCluskey from Dixon, Joel Butler from Woodland Sunrise and Dave Molinaro who was accused of visiting after a long absence. It must be football season again!
Guests of Rotarians
There were no guests today. I thought I had warned everyone not to let this happen again. Past Presidents get no respect I guess.

The Tahoe City Rotary Ski Challenge is scheduled for this coming March 5th. Let Bob know if you are interested in forming another team.

Dona Mast reported that September 8th is International Literacy Day! She appealed for donation of children’s books between now and then to be provided to children in the local school district. Bring a children’s book to Rotary and make a worthy donation!
Birthdays
Jessie Perez was recognized for number 34 August 1st in Watsonville, CA. Mahlon Whittle was celebrating Government Healthcare by turning 65. He was born August 17th in San Angelo, TX in 1943. Jim Nolan, who could never be our President despite being a staunch Democrat, was also born August 17th in Balbriggen, Ireland in 1948.
Anniversaries

Don Smith and Scott Johnston were absent and therefore were not warned. Cary Sullivan was celebrating #27. He was married in National City, CA. He noted that his wife laughs at his golf game. Don’t feel so bad Cary, most of us have generated plenty of laughs in that setting my friend.
Recognition
Irish Jimmy Boy Nolan took care of recognizing a large group of Rotarians. The Cash for Clunkers program stimulated quite a few Rotarians to buy new vehicles. Ken Nordgren, Bob Griffith and Marc Werum were driving new vehicles and paid $5 of their $4500 rebate. Dan Stroski was thankful that his son will be coming home from Iraq and will be stationed at Mather AFB. Dave Molinaro and Mahlon Whittle each paid $5 for their annual football bet between the Raiders & 49rs. Mahlon exclaimed that this is a “No Sweat Bet for Me!” Pam Vargas was caught texting on her cell phone creating the first challenge to President Bob’s ban of cell phones. She got off easy with only $5 and announced that the United Way Kick off is 9-10-09J. Gary Bunch, Recognition chair was recognized for not have been recognized so far this year. Gary was heard to exclaim “people don’t dare to fine me”. Good luck with that Gary. Jimmy called on Tom Schwarzgrubber to get naked. This prompted Cary Sullivan to quip: “Talk about cash for clunkers!” After this awkward moment, Jim went to work with Rotary questions. He started with Howard Newens who didn’t know when Paul Harris wrote the 4 way test, but was happy that he didn’t have any more state IOU’s. Christian Sherrill didn’t know the answer either, but Bob Tamblyn caught the trick question by noting that Paul Harris didn’t write the 4 way test. Tim Bernard was startled from a daydream and didn’t have a clue. Randy Blake, Bruce Ahlquist, Mary Ann Trongo couldn’t guess how many Rotary clubs in district 5160 you could make up at. Steve Venables broke the streak by knowing that you couldn’t make up at any club on Saturday. He didn’t do him much good though. Jim ended everyone’s pain by telling us that Herb Taylor wrote the 4 way test in 1934.
Rags to Riches

Craig Miyamoto proved that he is no Joker by pulling it out of the deck to win $238. I’ve got some investment advice if you’re interested Craig!

Today’s Program: March of Dimes
Dona Mast introduced Ashley and Whitney the associate executive director and campaign coordinator for the Sacramento March of Dimes. They noted that the March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit for pregnancy and newborn health. President Delano Roosevelt started the March of Dimes in 1938 to help find a cure for Polio. Funds from the March of Dimes supported Jonas Salk’s research in the development of a vaccine. Currently, the March of Dimes is devoted to preventing premature birth and birth defects. 50% of the causes of birth defects and premature births are known, but the remaining 50% remains undiscovered. Ashley and Whitney are planning a new fund raising event for Woodland. The March for Babies will be held Saturday, October 24th at Pioneer High School. This is a 9 hour walking event comprised of teams of 8-15 people in order to raise funds for ongoing research into birth defects.
