Today's Meeting

President Bob Nakken called the meeting to order, reminding everyone that we are “The Original Rotary Club of Woodland”. Bob welcomed those Rotarians returning from the Greater Ireland Invitational back home. We recited the pledge of allegiance after which Jim McGibbon capably led the club in song. Bob then started his own recognition. He rewarded Marc Ullrich with a sixpack of Smithwicks for having the lowest score in the Irish Invitational. Chuck Maltese paid for winning the Woodland Healthcare Foundation Duck Pluck Naming Contest. He rightfully credited his wife Joyce with BaQuack Obama. He paid $10 for the privilege of winning $50.
Visiting Rotarians
Ron Maroviov introduced Carolyn Schrader from the Luna Vista Club who was also our speaker for the day.
Guests of Rotarians
We were without Guest today. Please don’t let this happen again!

Anniversaries

Kevin Haarberg was reminded of his 13th anniversary to Lori. He celebrated it in Ireland with 13 of his favorite friends. He did call home using Chuck Maltese’s phone. Lori, if you’re reading this, I hope you went shopping!
Recognition
Roger Dorris stepped to the plate as master of recognition. He started by auctioning off Scott Johnston’s putter. Craig Miyamoto bid $25 but Roger felt sorry for Scott and returned it for only $5. Sorry Craig, better luck next time. Scott Johnston and Kevin Haarberg were fined $10 for calling during a Rotary meeting. As it turned out, this was just another George Berrettoni scam. George finally succumbed to the 4-way test and fessed up that he had faked the call. George paid his fine and went back to sleep. Les Englemann was recognized for losing 2 dozen golf balls in Ireland. Roger recognized Chuck Maltese for being at his first meeting since his demotion. Poor Roger forgot that Chuck was present not two weeks ago. Still, no mercy for poor Chuck. Scott Johnston, Kevin Haarberg and Chuck Maltese were recognized for the worst scores in the Irish Invitational. They’re lucky this writer wasn’t there to rob them of this recognition. Jim McGibbon gave a mini program on the boys golf outing. He reminded everyone that he had pins for anyone who wanted one. Kris Kristensen was recognized for the best score and had the pleasure of playing with one of the oldest members of the golf club, an 87 year old who had enough stuff left to outdrive Kris on one hole. Marc Ullrich then gave another mini program on his Irish exploits on the links. He even threatened to sing, but fortunately spared us the pain. Rigo Torres and Gerry Quinlan were then forced to cough up $10 for the cash for clunker program. Finally, Gary Wegener pleaded for help to fixing a windsurfing sale. Boy was he barking up the wrong tree. He wasted $5.
Rags to Riches

Randy Blake had the rare pleasure of winning for the second week in a row. Who said there’s no such thing as a free lunch….two weeks in a row!
Today’s Program
Dona Mast introduced Carolyn Schrader of the Luna Vista Club. Carolyn spoke about Literacy and how the Luna Vista Club was helping Dingle Elementary school through the Autoskill program. This is a proven computer assisted reading program for third graders. It has shown improvements in all levels of reading for students who participated. Each student was sponsored at a cost of $80. Rotary international and local schools covered the remaining cost. Each student worked ½ to 1 hour per day after school with very good results. Carolyn noted that one Rotary Internationals prime focuses this year is literacy. She recommended this program to our club as a means of assisting local kids to read better.
