Today's Meeting

Frank Gardner continued with the grand tradition of “sweeping out the old, and in with the new” as he led new President Robert “Bob” Nakken to the podium for his first meeting. Once Bob got settled into his new position the members of the club greeted Bob with the traditional tithe of a penny, or whatever else they had loose in their pockets.
President Bob quickly informed everybody that Rotary is where the “Past, Present and Future Come Together.” Roger Dorris then led the club in the Pledge. After a false start to Rotary Grace, Marc Faye and the Club finished strong with one of the better sounding Rotary Graces in at least a year. Sorry Chuck.
Although he was absent, Immediate Past President Chuck Maltese haunted us as Bob stated that any cell phone going off would be a $10, fine and would be collected. A moment of silence was held for Jack Potter, a Rotarian from the Woodland Sunrise Club.
Visiting Rotarians
Don Huff III introduced Woodland Sunrise member Brad Van Sant.
Guests of Rotarians
Ben Pate introduced Amy Tran and Dave Molinaro introduced his daughter Mikayla.
Announcements
Gary Wegener spoke about the email that he sent out to the club members asking if anyone had any leads in obtaining bathroom and kitchen fixtures at a discount. At this point it looks like the three Woodland Rotary clubs are going to have to kick in some additional money to help complete the Gibson House project. Our Rotary Endowment Board was going to meet this Wednesday to discuss the issue. The Rotary Beer Booth committee meetings have started and Gerry Quinlan has agreed to be our leader. Good luck Gerry. Jim Nolan toured the RI Headquarters in Evanston, IL on a recent trip to the Chicago area. Jim was fortunate enough to be at the HQ at the same time that RI President John Kenny was there. Mark Werum presented Bob with his new President’s badge.
Birthdays
Alan Flory left President Bob a list of birthdays that included Jim McGibbon (already paid) Don Huff III (actually it was #2 who had also already paid) and Don Smith (not willing to pay in advance). It is nice to see that some of the finest Rotary traditions of having incorrect information on birthdays are going to continue.
Anniversaries

Carl Rodegerdts celebrated 48 years on July 1st and Marc Faye was wondering where his early warning was. Chuck Maltese was not present and Howard Newens said that he was married in Oakland something years ago. Roger Kohlmeier is in Hawaii celebrating his anniversary. Gary Wegener got married in 2004.
Recognition
Appointing himself in charge of everything today, Bob led recognition and immediately asked Pat Imbach, Christian Sherrill, Howard Newens and Kevin Haarberg to donate $5 for sitting next to Rotary Royalty (that would be Jim Nolan after his recent RI HQ visit). Scott Johnston and Jim McGibbon were offered the chance to prepay for their upcoming overseas golf trip or pay more when they got back. Jim jumped at the chance to save $3 and also talked about his son Bruce at the same time. Jim proudly announced that Bruce had committed to become an Assistant Professor at Yale. Tim Bernard started Thankful Time by announcing that his last child had graduated from UC Davis and has already started an internship in Napa. Roy Holmes was thankful for a recent family BBQ. Dona Mast announced that her granddaughter had obtained her drivers permit. Karl Diekman was happy that he ran into Bob and Gay at the RI convention, but his tablemates were not so happy after Bob made Ben Pate, David Janes and Steve Venables pay for another Rotary Royalty member (Karl our Rotary District Governor Elect). Carl Rodegerdts was happy that his grandson’s All Star team had made it to the championship game but knew winning the tournament was going to be tough. D3 was happy that Brandon changed his Fourth of July plans. Bob ended Recognition with the announcement that attorney jokes will be free if he likes them or $10 if it does not make him smile. Any hair joke will be an immediate $10 fine and possible ejection from the meeting.
Rags to Riches

Tabb Randolph was the first one to get a chance to win $100, but all he ended up with was a free lunch.
Today’s Program
Guess who? Bob again. This time Bob spoke about the wonderful and inspiring time that he and Gay had at the Rotary International Convention held in Birmingham, England. Some of the thoughts and ideas that Bob took away from the convention were;
· What are you going to do to make Rotary stronger?
· What is your club going to do to make Rotary stronger?
· International – Although it is difficult for one club to do an international project on their own, could the three Woodland Clubs come together to do something?
· Locally – more cooperation between the local clubs could be very beneficial.
· Membership – Maintain our quality membership and add new members when possible.
· Get to know each other better. It shouldn’t take two or three years to have members step up to help out. Bob specifically pointed out the how involved Ben Pate has been recently.
· Literacy & Education – Bob said that there are opportunities in our area to help the local community.
Bob went on to show pictures of his trip to the RI convention (England) and his extended vacation in France. The photos of the historical sites were great. You can tell Bob and Gay really enjoyed their time. Bob is off to a great start, only 51 more weeks to go.
