Announcements

Mahlon Whittle reminded us that next Tuesday, June 30th, will be the Demotion Meeting at the Yolo Fliers Club. Spouses/other guests also invited. Cost is $35 per person. Time: 6pm no-host cocktails /7pm dinner & program. If you have not done so already, please RSVP Aniek Ramsay at Aniek@vanbeurden.com. There will be no Noon meeting on June 30th.

Bob Tamblyn reported that a total of nine (9) victims of the recent day care fire in Mexico have been treated by Shiners’ Hospital in Sacramento (Bob is Chairman of the Hospital’s Board of Governors).

Randy Blake reported that two Rotary sponsored Woodland representatives attended Camp Royal this month.

President Chuck received a thank you letter from the Woodland High School principal thanking the Club for its recent scholarships.

President Chuck presented Tim Pettit with a golf tee sculpted in the shape of a molar.

Birthdays

Jim McGibbon will enjoy his 69th birthday (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) tomorrow. Ron Maraviov celebrated a birthday on June 21st. Bob Tamblyn paid for his 63rd birthday
(Nevada City, Miners Hospital) on June 20th.

Anniversaries

On June 12th Wim and Pauly Van Muyden celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Jim McGibbon recently celebrated his 41st wedding anniversary with Susan (Montréal, Quebec, Canada).

Recognition

Bob Moeller was in charge today. Bob opened things by recognizing  Bob Tamblyn’s role as Grand Marshall of a recent Shriner’s parade. Mark Ullrich was thankful for the bloody marys he and his daughter Erin received at Wild Wings 7th tee from Mahlon Whittle on Father’s Day.

Bob recognized George Berrettoni and his recent sale of Tony’s Bar in Woodland. George said Tony’s has been in business since before Prohibition. George’s family held the liquor license for Tony’s from 1933 until this year, making it then the oldest such license active in Yolo County. Bob also recognized George’s 93 year old father, Romey, for his 72 years as a member of the Elks Lodge.

Finally, in recognition that never once during his year as President was Chuck “pissed off”, Bob fined all members in attendance $2. What a deal!

Rags to Riches

Tom Schwarzgruber won $36.

Today’s Program

Dona Mast, substituting for Linda Konietzko, introduced Dani Thomas, Executive Director of the Yolo County Arts Council (YCAC) as today’s speaker. Susan Lord Bovey, a member of the YCAC Board of Directors, was also in attendance. YCAC was established in 1981 as a recommendation of the Yolo County Cultural Plan to further the arts and culture of the county. Its mission is to actively foster, develop, and advocate support for all the arts; to advance arts education in all county schools and community; and to foster communication among artists, business, education, government. Among several programs, YCAC curates Gallery 625 (located on the first floor of the Yolo County Administration Building at 625 Court Street in Woodland) which regularly displays the works of local artists free of charge. YCAC also works with five major public school districts in Yolo County to further art education. (Our own Karen Heddington said she her art work was selected with YCAC involvement in 1988 for display in the Congressional Art Show in Washington, DC.) YCAC also sponsors the Arts & Ag project, an effort in collaboration with the Yolo Land Trust and the Davis Farmers Market Association, to cultivate a dialogue between artists, farmers and the community to raise awareness of the importance of preserving working landscapes and to promote sustainable agriculture and visual arts in Yolo County. The Arts & Ag Project will culminate with “Art Farm”, an exhibition and “art harvest” benefit on October 2, 2009 at the Gallery 625. Dani emphasized that arts contribute to the health of any community; art connects people; and art promotes economic development. A non-profit organization, YCAC operates with a 7 member Board of Directors and 1.5 paid staff. Funding comes primarily from members and grants. YCAC does not receive direct financial assistance from Yolo County. YCAC will soon be renamed to “Yolo Arts” to avoid any confusion about the role of the organization with the County of Yolo. More information about YCAC can be obtained at its website: yoloarts.org
